Many things have been in the works lately! I just got finished with a show at Substance Gallery here in Orlando. I did these 3 mechanical song birds for that. They are each mounted on a wood box and their eyes light up when the button is depressed. I am hoping to do more shows in 2012, with a few already scheduled for the first half of the year.

I also finally have the finished photos of the taxidermy bust. I am happy with how he turned out and hope to do more like it in the future. I really love working on a large scale and have all but abandoned Sculpey!

I am also still continuing to work on my 3D, focusing more on texturing now. Here is a mostly finished shot of Glicky (the pterodactyl) inside zBrush. Also, I started working on my Parrot Island stuff in 3D. Here is Calvin close to being ready for textures.

Next year will bring many new things! I plan on venturing more into large scale sculpture, texture painting, and art shows. I will be attending Monsterpalooza in April and am excited to meet so many other creature artists. I will have a table there and will be selling a few model kits based off my tree dragons.

Finished photos of the taxidermy bust and cockatoo coming soon! Even a few pics from the City Arts show. Until then, check out this model I finished up today for Arena.net’s internship application. This was done in Maya, zBrush, and Photoshop.

I’ve been working hard on both of these projects! While both are now finished, I will not be posting finished photos until my gallery opening this Thursday night. If you are in the Orlando area, come out to City Arts Factory (Downtown on the corner of Orange and Pine) to see both of these pieces in person!

The cockatoo has a moving jaw that looks awesome as well as lights along his sides. I used glass pellets for the lights. His structure is very similar to the toucan, only my husband did the wiring before I sculpted this time. It made things a lot easier! Look for more robotics from us in the future. we are hoping to advance with each project.

The taxidermy bust looks great! He has been airbrushed since these photos and has shotgun shells for eyes. I placed the fur in 13 pieces, using hot glue to adhere them to the foam. I then used clippers to shave there hair shorter in places. I plan on continuing working in large scale and creating more of these busts. It was SO much fun to work on!

I know I have been MIA again! I got bogged down with commissions, work, and life. However, I’ve been working on two pieces for a show I have coming up in September. The first is a Mechanical Cockatoo in the same vein as the toucan. This one will hopefully have a moving jaw, with red lights for the eyes and along the sides.

The next is a faux taxidermy bust based off my friend Nicholas Boyd’s painting. It was sculpting in EPS foam, apoxie sculpt, and crayola model magic. He will be finished with blue fur and attached to a plaque. It was a great warm up to foam sculpting. I am hoping to get started with the foam sculpting on the forest emperor project this weekend, actually!

I am going to be opening up for a few sculpture commissions in order to offset some expenses I have coming up. I will have five slots to fill, first come/paid, first served.

My forte is creatures and animals. I have been sculpting them for 10 years and am happy to take most any commission in this genre. I can do pet portraits, either as busts or full body sculpts. I can sculpt your favorite animal, your own personal character, or you can give me guidelines to create a creature for you. I can also sculpt human characters, though I don’t have as much experience with them. I am glad to do humanoid characters, so long as they aren’t “furry” type characters. Finally, I won’t sculpt any copyrighted or trademarked characters so no Disney, no Pokemon, nothing that anyone but you has created.

I charge by an hourly rate and am giving a discount for this round of commissions. A standard sculpture as diagrammed in the sketches below takes around 16 hours to complete. Note, a humanoid character at the standard level stands around 10 inches tall. More complex pieces can take up to 24 hours. Anything upward of 24 hours I am not able to take at this time.

If you are interested in getting a custom sculpture, please e-mail me with a description of what you are looking for and any relevant reference material (ie photos, drawings). I can then let you know how long it will take to complete the piece and give you a price quote.

Here are the finished photos of the toucan, taken by my talented photographer husband! The final piece measures just over 4 feet tall and is just over a foot wide on the base.

Here’s a little concept art I have been working on for a personal 3D project. These guys are all going to be low poly models with hand painted textures. I am having so much fun with them!

The mechanical toucan made the front page of Propeller, the intranet news site for Full Sail University where I work. The 3D Arts department had a staff art show this Friday, and the mechanical toucan made his debut there. He was very well received and I am honored to have been featured in this article.

Additionally, the interview I did with 3D Artist Magazine is now published in issue 28, available on newsstands now in the UK. It will be available for purchase in the US in the next month or so. If you haven’t gotten the chance to read the online article, you can do so here.

Here’s a bunch of progress photos for the toucan sculpt. He is very close to being done. Hopefully on Wednesday this week, the electronics and LEDs will be all hooked up and ready to go.

The rivets were made with tiny metal stickers I got from the scrapbooking section at joanns. The wood base is made of old shipping pallets. I had a lot of help from my friends Mike Marras and Dave McLiesh to get it built and looking cool. It will have some old travel labels glued to it once it is done.

This has been quite a learning process every step of the way. Almost everything done with this piece, I have never done before in the past. I was particularly happy with the peeling paint effect that I got. I used this technique to get it looking layered.
