More Progress

May 31, 2009

progress4

Getting close on my Wolverine sculpt. I gotta get him cleaned up and put the fine details in. I will be casting him in resin that will have a faux pewter finish (or adamantium!)

I am going to try to get more painting done on Dexter tomorrow. I love productive weekends.

Freaking.Me.Out.

progress11

Got a little more painting done on Dexter. I want to work some more warm highlights into the hair and probably a few more in the skin. The shirt and blood splatters will come last :)

This sure has been quite the learning experience. It makes me want to do more large scale type sculpts.

The Cart Puller is Done…with a Name!

May 28, 2009

Dezzi

Dimensions: 5″ x 4.5″ x 11.5″

Dezzi the Elder is a retired cart worker. He spends his days traveling the world and teaching youngsters. Awww! Dezzi is a character I created for my sculpting book (currently on hold till after comic*con). I am including his step-by-step progression as a walk through. Hopefully, I can get my book done by this time next year.

I created a Twitter account last night. You can now follow my art updates through there too! Feel free to add me!

More Dexter in the next few days.

Painting Adventures

May 27, 2009

I started painting Dexter today. Skin tones are always difficult as skin is transparent, reflective, and everything else that is annoying. I start with a base color, about 3 coats of acrylic. I always use thin, watered down layers of paint to avoid a plastic-y look. I was taught to paint from the inside out when it comes to skin. Painting undertones is the key to realistic skin, in my opinion. I start by laying down thin layers of yellow, blue, and red. I then add in some white to “break up” the undertones to make the skin looks more random and realistic. I then use a unifying, thin layer of the original base tone to bring it all together. I basically repeat this process until it looks right…it’s pretty time consuming, really!

I included a photo of my pallet from today just to show how many different colors go into creating a skin tone. These colors also mix to create purples, greens, and oranges in the skin. They are all subtle, but they are there for sure. My husband kindly took a progress shot for me because I kept blowing the photos out with my flash! This is how far I got today, but there is still work to be done on the skin. Painting the stubble will be an adventure in itself!

My cart puller is nearing completion! Hopefully I will have finished photos of him by the end of the week. And Dexter should be pretty close as well.

Quickie

progress3

Just a quick Wolvie progress shot since I promised an update. I got a lot of painting done on the cart puller as well, and I will have photos of him some time this week. Also, stay tuned for progress of Dexter being painted.

So long weekend.

Take 2!!

May 25, 2009

So I was looking at the photos I posted earlier and they just didn’t look right to me. I asked my husband to play around with the lighting a bit to get the look I wanted. And by his voodoo magic, he got Dexter looking more like himself. It’s amazing what a little light change can do!

More to come!

He Stares Into Your Soul

May 24, 2009

progress9

Dexter is baked, primed, and ready to be painted (which I will be working on this week). Here are some much better photos that my husband took last night. I am pretty happy with the end result for the sculpt, considering it’s my first stab at creating a likeness. Although the process is difficult, I could see myself getting into doing this regularly. It’s very interesting to observe all the subtleties of the human face. The slightest changes make all the difference in the world!

In other news, I’ve been working on my Comic*Con portfolio design. I have an awesome looking prototype that is the result of a big brainstorm session with my coworkers. I love being surrounded by such talented and creative people. I will have images here when they are finished.

I love three day weekends. That means I get more art done! Today, I will be working on Wolverine as well as getting some painting done on the cart puller. Look for another update tonight or tomorrow.

Likenesses are Fun!

progress2

Made some more progress on Wolverine today. It’s starting to look a little more like him. Hopefully he will be finished up soon so I can get to casting him.

Dexter is baked, and will be primed and photographed before the weekend is up (hopefully!)

Messing around with designs/packaging ideas for my portfolios and such.

Really ready for the weekend!!

Coming to a Close

May 20, 2009

I am finally putting the finishing touches on Dexter. He has pores and stubble now, but the flash erased most of the detail. Not to worry, my husband will surely take better photos once Dex is primed. And the paint should pick up the detail real nice. I am going to let him sit for the night and come back tomorrow after work to see if there is anything else I want to change or add. Then I will get him baked and mounted to the base. I think putting the collar on for the shirt really brought it together!

I also finished up my business card design. I managed to get my needlebeast in there since my cart puller wasn’t turning out to be a good fit for that aspect ratio. I also decided on getting some postcards printed up to put on the flier tables at Comic*Con since business cards tend to get lost in the piles. The design is similar to my business cards, but I think it works for what it is. I have 1000 business cards and 500 postcards on order from overnightprints.com. Should be more than enough!

Hopefully I can have Wolvie close to finished if not finished by the end of the week. Stay tuned!
